NASCAR on TV this week

Shane van Gisbergen Spanks the Field South of the Border

Shane van Gisbergen won Sunday’s (June 15) NASCAR Cup Series race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez by a margin of almost 17 seconds.

SVG put on a dominant performance from the pole, leading a race high 60 laps to win his first race of the 2025 season and punch his ticket to the playoffs. He had to work for it in the early stages in the race, battling with Ty Gibbs for the lead.

Unfortunately for Gibbs, the two got separated on strategy and van Gisbergen happened to be on the race winning one after topping the field in stage two.

Gibbs wound up 11th when the checkered flag waived.

SVG gave a lot of credit to his Trackhouse Racing team for the car it brought to the track being lights out all weekend.

“What a week, I’ve really enjoyed myself here.” van Gisbergen told Prime Video “Our car was amazing. I think the 54 [Gibbs] was close, but that last stint, man, what a pleasure to just rip it lap after lap and watching them get smaller in the mirror. Unreal.”

van Gisbergen became the first driver since Marvin Porter in 1960 to get his first two career Cup wins in inaugural events. The New Zealand native’s first win was in the inaugural Chicago Street Race in 2023.

Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, Michael McDowell, John Hunter Nemechek, Chase Briscoe, Cole Custer, William Byron and Chris Buescher made up the rest of the top 10.

Runner-up Bell felt that the only thing that held him back from winning was the driver.

“I think more than anything it was just me,” Bell told Prime Video. “I need to do a little bit more homework to figure out where I can be better to keep up with these guys.”

Elliott made a late charge through the field after taking tires on the final caution of the day. He felt that he could’ve potentially been in position to win but used up his stuff after getting up into the top five.

“I didn’t have anything left,” Elliott told Prime Video. “I was kind of cooked after that.”

The Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Carson Hocevar saga added a new chapter this week. Hocevar spun Stenhouse once again this week, this time in the stadium section of the track after what seemed to be a lockup on Hocevar’s part.

Stenhouse came up to the No. 77 after the race to confront Hocevar while the latter was still in the cockpit of his racecar. Only words were exchanged this time, but it was clear that Stenhouse is becoming more fed up with the situation.
