Though it’s a throwback weekend, Jimmie Johnson topping Sprint Cup Series practice is nothing old.
At a lap time of 27.937 seconds [176.025 mph], Johnson was quickest during the 85-minute practice session at Darlington Raceway. Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney completed the top 3, as the field made their first laps of the weekend after Friday’s on-track schedule was cancelled due to severe weather.
Kyle Larson, who is hot off a debut victory last week at Michigan, finished fourth ahead of Ryan Newman, Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott and Martin Truex, Jr.,
Paul Menard and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. completed the top 10 while defending Southern 500 winner Carl Edwards was mired back in 22nd spot.
