Lucas Wolfe puts on speed display in run to Port Royal Speed Week victory

Lucas Wolfe got a warm reception when he pulled into Victory Lane Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway.

Fans cheered. Some even took time to give Wolfe a standing ovation. It was well-deserved for a week full of speed.

See, Wolfe has been the fastest car in Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speed Week. He set quick time in five of the six shows in which he competed but had little to show for it other then a pair of runner-up finishes.

Wolfe rectified that at the Juniata County oval. The inversion meant little, as Wolfe stormed from sixth and took advantage of Dave Blaney’s misfortune to claim the 30-lap Sprint Car feature and a $5,000 payday.

Amazingly, it was Wolfe’s first Port Royal victory and first in Pennsylvania Speed Week competition…ever.

“Traffic was certainly difficult,” Wolfe said. “He was up top, and we were making up ground on the bottom. It would have been a good race but, unfortunately, he had that problem.”

“We’ve had a very successful week, we just couldn’t get over the hump. We hope this does that, and we can get going.”

Wolfe has a shot at being a champion.

Despite missing Race 2 of Speed Week at Lincoln to see the birth of his daughter, Wolfe is tied with Greg Hodnett for the series lead with 895 points. Brent Marks (775), Danny Dietrich (734) and Brian Montieth (559) complete the top five.

Wolfe and Hodnett will settle the Speed Week championship in Sunday’s finale at Selinsgrove Speedway.

At Port Royal, it was all Blaney in the opening laps.
