Pace Laps: Dover Downer, Elliott’s Excellence, Crafton’s Consistency and More

Pace Laps: Dover Downer, Elliott’s Excellence, Crafton’s Consistency and More

Sprint Cup Series:  Dover Downer - After the excitement of the first two races of the reborn Chase, Dover produced a race that didn’t follow the script.  Rather than being a hard-charging affair, with the four drivers positioned to lose out racing like madmen, it seemed like everyone did his best to log laps, not make a mistake, and do what was needed to bring a car home in one piece. Perhaps Dover isn’t quite the track to make wild moves, ... Read More »

Beyond the Cockpit: Driver or Crew Chief, Mike Neff Knows Speed

Mike Neff has been in racing since the early 90s. He won a NHRA title with Gary Scelzi before joining John Force racing in 2007 to be a fourth driver. He became the seventh person in history to win a race as a driver and a crew chief. He was the first to actually win as a crew chief first and then a driver. He’s currently the crew chief for Robert Hight. During the Carolina Nationals he sat down with ... Read More »

Pace Laps: Chase Mess, Justin Boston’s Nationwide Debut, Cole Custer Makes History & More

Sprint Cup Series: A Hodge-Podge for Chase Drivers - Let’s ignore the fact there were 15 cautions at Loudon, and that most of them happened in the second half of the race, leading to an event that felt like a stop-and-go commute downtown in a major city during rush hour.  The result of all the cautions brought about a mix of strategies and helped even drivers with injured cars find a way to get to the front. When Kyle Busch got ... Read More »

Pace Laps: Roush Fenway’s Struggles, Truck Championship Contenders and Racing vs. Rain

Pace Laps: Roush Fenway’s Struggles, Truck Championship Contenders and Racing vs. Rain

Sprint Cup Series: Slow Start for Roush Fenway Racing - There has been a gap between Penske Racing and Roush Fenway Racing all season.  Though both teams use Ford engines, Penske has been gapping their counterpart, and never was it more evident than at Chicagoland on Sunday. While Brad Keselowski earned the win and Joey Logano fought to a fourth-place finish, the RFR drivers languished on the track, never coming close to contention, and really, not ever being much of a ... NHRA Carolina Nationals Day Two Report

Qualifying for the Pep Boys Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway is in the books and four drivers have the edge on the field heading into the first round of the six race NHRA championship Countdown. Eddie Krawiec topped the field in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.849 second pass at 194.30 mph, and added some extra points to his total for his fast runs, points he said could be crucial to his championship chances in the Countdown. “It’s nice to ... Day one of the Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, NC, is in the books. Pace Laps: Kahne In, Harvick Cruises, IndyCar Adieu, and More

Cup: Sweet Relief for Kahne          By racing for the Cup juggernaut Hendrick Motorsports, there are high expectations for Kasey Kahne.  That his brethren at the organization have all earned three wins apiece makes his season look all the worse.  In fact, with only two top-5 finishes in 2014, Kahne was looking like a second-tier driver and one who had to be glancing over his shoulder at the upstart Nationwide and de facto Hendrick development driver, Chase Elliott. ... Pace Laps: Jimmie Johnson Success, First Time Nationwide Winners and Powers’ Power

Pace Laps: Jimmie Johnson Success, First Time Nationwide Winners and Powers’ Power

Sprint Cup: A normal race at Michigan for Jimmie Johnson usually means that he runs out of fuel in the final laps after leading for most of the day and having the best car.  Johnson, however, did the other Jimmie Johnson thing at Michigan.  That usually means falling way back in the field and then seemingly arriving like a magician in the top ten as the race comes to its conclusion. Sure enough, Johnson started in the back, then had Chad Knaus put ... Read More »
